The Bridgewater Barracudas Swim Club exists to promote and develop competitive swimming for the youth of Bridgewater and surrounding area during the summer months.
All swimmers enter at the non-competitive "participation" level where they are assessed by the coaches, enhance their skills and gradually improve their speed as they get better at their strokes and improve their confidence in the water. Once achieving speed times in certain events, they can advance to the competitive level of the team. Some, mostly older swimmers will make it out of participation in their first year, but many (of the younger swimmers in particular) may spend one or more years in this level. All swimmers, including the participation swimmers, are considered part of the team and can participate in meets, time trials and regular practices.
The club has a heavy focus on mentoring, whereby older swimmers act as role models and "coaches" for the younger ages. Once a swimmer turns 13, they have an opportunity to become a club mentor and then move up to junior coach and assistant coach (which are compensated positions). Historically, most of our head coaches have grown up through the club. This is an integral part of the success and comradary that exists within the club
